According to Omar Shabazz's latest and most explosive documentary 'Conspiracy: Why Not?' [purchase the DVD by email from SSha889130@aol.com] the assassination of Malcolm X on the 21st of February 1965 began with the arrival at the Nation of Islam's Newark Mosque No.25 of Minister Louis X Farrakhan of Boston's Mosque No.11. Accompanying him were Boston FOI captain Clarence 2X Gill and three Boston FOI lieutenants -- Joseph Smott and the brothers Ronald and Roy Thompson. They were met upon arrival by Newark No.25 lieutenants Edward Oliver and Agurs Linward X Cathcart. Arriving shortly thereafter was Springfield FOI captain John X Peters. A seperate vehicle had also arrived carrying Talmadge Hayer, Benjamin Thomas, Leon Davis, Wilbur McKinley and William Bradley -- the Nation of Islam hit squad that had been assembled by NOI national secretary John Ali to assassinate Malcolm X.

On what would have been Malcolm X's 86th birthday, former Nation of Islam Minister Linward X Cathcart is in the process of filing a $50 million lawsuit today in Newark federal court against Viking Press, Columbia University and the estate of the late professor and author Manning Marable. The suit being filed by Attorney Mark Fury on behalf of his client claims the book is filled with lies and unsubstantiated innuendos. In Marable's book, "Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention," the author suggests Linward Cathcart may have been involved in the murder of Malcolm X or physically supervised the assassination in the Audubon Ballroom in New York City in 1965. Cathcart's reaction?

"Supervise who? I didn't know any of those gentlemen who were later arrested for that crime. I didn't know anybody in that ballroom that day."

Cathcart's attorney Mark Fury says the new 594-page biography has forced his client to fear for his life. "Mr. Manning Marable's family now lives in comfort off of millions of books sold where Mr. Cathcart's family lives in fear because we all know that Malcolm X is one of the most beloved figures in American history. If anybody thought that Mr. Cathcart or anybody was involved in his assassination and didn't get just punishment, it is not unheard of for people to walk up to your front door and do street justice." Dear Honorable United States Attorney General Eric Holder:

We, the Emmett Till Justice Campaign, do solemnly and formally request that you direct, pursuant to 28 U.S.C. 533[1] and [3], both the Criminal Division and the Civil Rights Division, to jointly investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding the 1965 assassination of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz [aka and hereafter referred to as “Malcolm X”]. This new request shall serve as a supplement to our April 6, 2011 original request made to Mark Kappeloff, Chief of the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division, to place Malcolm X on the list of unsolved civil rights era murders to be reviewed for possible investigation pursuant to the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act.

Furthermore, we firmly believe that 28 U.S.C. 533[1] and [3] amply provide the precedent, the legal authority, and the investigative infrastructure necessary for the US Department of Justice [the “DOJ”], in partnership with the States of New York and/or New Jersey, to conduct the most comprehensive and credible search, by the government, for the truth concerning Malcolm X’s assassination since February 21, 1965.

As you know, under 28 U.S.C. 533[1], the DOJ may conduct an investigation relating to the assassination of Malcolm X, to investigate the possible commission of federal crimes for which the applicable statute of limitations may have run, in order to establish the facts of the crime, independent of whether such facts may lead to a prosecution.

The DOJ also has authority, under 28 U.S.C. 533[3] to investigate the role of the DOJ or the Federal Bureau of Investigation [“FBI”] in the original investigation of the Malcolm X assassination. Such an investigation under 28 U.S.C. 533[3] could include a re-investigation of the facts surrounding the assassination itself, in order to assess the conduct of the FBI’s original investigation and determine the accuracy and completeness of its findings, as well as whether anyone within the FBI or the DOJ was involved personally in the assassination.

Included, you will find a May 3, 1979 petition filed on behalf of convicted assassins Norman 3X Butler and Thomas 15X Johnson, by their attorney, William M. Kunstler, with the Congressional Black Caucus, seeking a congressional investigation into the Malcolm X assassination. We stipulate, for purposes of our request, that we primarily rely on the purported facts contained within this congressional petition.

Specifically, we firmly believe that it would be in the public’s interest to fully investigate the following, but not limited to, matters:

[1] The firebombing of the East Elmhurst, Queens, New York, home of
Malcolm X’s family on February 14,1965;

[2] The assassination of Malcolm X in the Audubon Ballroom in New York,
New York, on February 21, 1965;

[3] The assassination of Benjamin Brown outside his “Universal Peace”
mosque in Bronx, New York, on January 6, 1965;

[4] The firebombing of NOl Mosque No. 7 in Harlem, New York, on February
23, 1965; and

[5] Whether or not William Bradley and Mustafa Shabazz are the same
person.

On July 28, 1976, Antonin Scalia, Assistant Attorney General, Office of Legal Counsel ["Scalia"], issued an Opinion entitled “Jurisdiction of the Department of Justice to Investigate the Assassination of President Kennedy”. Scalia declared in the “Kennedy Assassination Opinion” that nothing in the language of 28 U.S.C. 533[1] requires the conclusion that the DOJ may not seek to “detect” crime when it cannot “prosecute” the violators. Scalia further states that “Indeed, there may be vital public interests served by establishing the facts surrounding the commission of a federal crime irrespective of whether the crime can be prosecuted”.

Scalia also points out the fact that there may be justification for an FBI investigation simply because the issue of the statute of limitations cannot be conclusively resolved without further information. This may also be true in the Malcolm X case. One potential suspect is alleged to have traveled from his home in the State of New Jersey, with a sawed-off shot gun, to New York and was the first one to shoot Malcolm X and then escaped back to New Jersey. The National Firearms Act of 1934 makes it a federal crime to be in possession of a sawed-off shotgun. 18 U.S.C. 3290 declares no statute of limitations shall extend to any person fleeing from justice. Therefore, an FBI investigation may initially be justified to determine whether this potential suspect is a fugitive from justice. Furthermore, 18 U.S.C. 844[d] makes it a federal crime to travel across the state line with explosives with the intent to destroy property or attempt to harm or kill someone, such as possibly may be the case in the firebombing of Malcolm X’s home and the firebombing of the NOI Mosque No. 7.

The Civil Rights Division Report on the Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. states that the federal investigators in their case had no subpoena power because the tolling of the statute of limitations on any underlying federal crime prevented the convening of a federal grand jury. To prevent that possible investigative shortfall in this inquiry, we are requesting that the DOJ engage in partnership, when necessary, with the States of New York and/or New Jersey to conduct a joint investigation with the States providing subpoena power from a state grand jury and cross-designation of a federal attorney to state court for any possible state prosecution.

Finally, the federal government has the special responsibility to protect and defend all citizens from violations of their rights secured by the U.S. Constitution and Laws of the United States. Therefore, we strongly request that you demonstrate your commitment to not abdicate or neglect your special responsibility in this matter by pursuing the truth and, if still possible, securing justice for Malcolm X and his family by any means legally necessary!

In a role eerily reminiscent of that performed by Mafia enforcer Luca Brasi in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather [where Don Corleone tasks his loyal hatchet man with visiting drug lord Virgil Sollozzo to feign disillusionment with his own Family in a cunning ruse aimed at drawing out the Don's enemies] Linward X Cathcart has implausibly claimed that his decision to attend the Malcolm X rally at the Audubon Ballroom on 21st February 1965 was driven by his 'disaffection' with Elijah Muhammad's program and his new-found interest in Malcolm's OAAU initiative.

In reality Cathcart, like Brasi, remained loyal to his 'Don' and was likely present at the Audubon in order to 'oversee' the five Newark No.25 assassins in the conduct of their murderous 'operation', ensure the success of the hit on Malcolm and report back to NOI National Secretary John Ali [who was in New York at the time] that the mission had been accomplished. Ali later caught a flight to Chicago and returned to 4847 South Woodlawn Avenue to personally inform NOI leader Elijah Muhammad that the 'hypocrite' was dead. Elijah Muhammad then held a press conference, attended by Ali, and during which he flatly denied any involvement in the assassination of Malcolm X.

"The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre"

On 14 February 1965 – Saint Valentine's Day – a vicious death squad of Nation of Islam arsonists affiliated with Harlem's Mosque No.7, Boston's Mosque No.11 and Springfield's Mosque No.13 [and acting on the direct orders of NOI Supreme Captain Raymond Sharrieff] conducted a truly cowardly Molotov cocktail attack on the East Elmhurst residence of Malcolm X while he, his wife and his infant daughters lay asleep inside. The perpetrators of this attack are believed to have included Mosque No.7 'captain' Joseph X Gravitt, Mosque No.11 'captain' Clarence 2X Gill, Mosque No.13 'captain' John Muhammad and none other than Minister Louis Farrakhan's half-brother, Alvin X Walcott. It is inconceivable that the role played by Walcott has been unknown to Minister Farrakhan since the attack. What beggars belief and staggers the senses is that in the dozens of news media interviews in which Farrakhan has been involved in the last three decades not once has he ever been asked a direct question about the criminal role his half-brother is believed to have played in this barbaric incident. That question is just one of the many he can finally expect to face in any future Justice Department-mandated grand jury proceeding.

[aka “the Rock of the South”]: Instrumental in boxing legend Muhammad Ali's conversion to the Nation of Islam, this former member of Elijah Muhammad's personal 'Honor Guard' and captain of the NOI's Miami mosque [under Minister Lucius Bey] may have played a role in the harboring of Clarence 2X Gill [the homicidal personal bodyguard of Muhammad Ali and a former captain at Louis Farrakhan's Boston Mosque No.11] following his 21st February 1965 escape from the Audubon Ballroom where he is believed to have been part of a back-up assassination squad and may have sustained a gunshot wound from Reuben Francis, one of Malcolm X's bodyguards. Abdul “the Rock” Rahman may have also helped orchestrate Muhammad Ali's infamous 1975 appearance at a Ku Klux Klan rally where Ali railed against 'race-mixing' to the rapturous applause of the KKK audience. As the criminal section of the DOJ's Civil Rights Division weighs its options in the reinvestigation of the Malcolm X assassination, Abdul Rahman may be among the many subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury.

Who was *King David*? And what were Louis Farrakhan and Elijah Muhammad revealing about each other in making that comparison?

Well, history ends up recording King David as a divinely cursed man who murdered his lieutenant, Uriah, in order to cover-up an act of adultery with the Hittite's wife, Bathsheba [2 Samuel 11:1 to 12:25]. The plan came unstuck when God sent the prophet Nathan to denounce King David by means of a parable. David was completely taken in, declaring at the end of it, "The man who did this deserves to die!" only to be told by Nathan, "You are that man". Sound familiar?

What is particularly striking about all of this is that Elijah Muhammad spoke his words to Farrakhan in 1957, a full 7-8 years before going on to fulfill those most horrendous of Davidian deeds - events he could NEVER have forseen - in his adulterous relations with the 'Bathshebas' of his secretarial harem, the pseudo-theological lies deployed to cover them up and the barbaric 21 February 1965 slaying of Uriah/Malcolm X as the blood-spattered seal on that prophecy.

This still image from the Omar Shabazz 2011 documentary 'Naked Lies: the Continuous War Against Malcolm X' [purchase the DVD by email from SSha889130@aol.com] depicts two of the conspirators in the Malcolm X assassination - Minister Louis Farrakhan and Linward X Cathcart [aka Abdul Karriem Muhammad] - at an unidentified Nation of Islam rally. Upon leaving the Audubon Ballroom following the 21 February 1965 assassination of Malcolm X, Cathcart reportedly contacted Minister Louis X at Newark Temple No.25 to inform him that Malcolm's followers - to include his young daughters - had acted like [what Farrakhan later described as] "damn cowardly dogs" as Malcolm was being gunned down.

On 3 April 2011, a day before the publication of Manning Marable's biography 'Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention', Louis Farrakhan met with Linward X in Washington DC. The purpose of the meeting remains unclear.

An interesting [albeit wholly ahistorical] depiction of the Malcolm X assassination as rendered by Michael Mann in his 2001 Muhammad Ali biopic, 'Ali'. The scene somewhat faithfully portrays the Al-Mustafa Shabazz / William Bradley shotgun assault on Malcolm X but adheres to the myth of a trio of assassins [Talmadge Hayer, Norman 3X Butler & Thomas 15X Johnson] when, as the 1977/8 Hayer Affidavits were to reveal, the assassination squad[s] were comprised of at least five individuals from Newark Mosque No.25 in the main auditorium of the Audubon in conjunction with [as New York filmmaker Omar Shabazz was to later uncover] a back-up hit team elsewhere in the Ballroom from Harlem's Mosque No.7 and led by FOI 'captain' Clarence 2X Gill – a vicious Bostonian thug who doubled as the personal bodyguard of Muhammad Ali.

Which leads to the second fiction depicted in the scene, namely, Will Smith's fanciful portrayal of Muhammad Ali's supposedly tearful and anguished reaction to Malcolm's killing when, as is more than likely [and like so many of the NOI's mindless, moronic and misled], Ali quite probably celebrated the assassination of Malcolm X – a despicable betrayal he was to later acknowledge as having been one of the worst mistakes of his life.

Captain Sykes Strikes Again!

“The full force of the blast perforated the chest, cutting into ‘the thoracic cavity, the left lung, pericardium, heart, aorta, right lung.’ ” Medically, this is how Malcolm X died, according to the new book “Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention,” by Manning Marable. But who fired the shotgun? The last of Malcolm X’s three convicted assassins was paroled last year, which might seem like odd timing for questions about guilt. But Marable’s painstakingly researched book contends some of the wrong men did time for the killing. It’s indisputable that there were several shooters. Marable, who died days before his book’s release last week, believed a man who was never charged fired the fatal shot. And he also believed that one man who served time wasn’t even at the New York ballroom where Malcolm X died.

It’s likely the dogged pursuits of Kansas City-based legal sleuth Alvin Sykes will be involved if anything new is proved about the conspiracy-laden 1965 murder. Sykes is responsible for a federal bill that created a unit in the Department of Justice to prosecute old civil rights era murders. He’s requesting the Malcolm X case be reviewed and/or investigated. Sykes enjoys tracking splinters of information as much as he covets time to ferret out arcane pieces of legal language. I’ve known him for 20 years. Never once has he cited a federal code, a court citation, a snippet of newly unearthed evidence that I couldn’t verify. Marable’s work includes new interviews, source documents and theories long bantered about, but never fully denied or proved. Malcolm X’s death has long been shrouded by the dealings of that era: informants, infighting among black militants, power struggles within the Nation of Islam and allegations of lackluster handling of the initial investigation.

Sykes is already at work contacting Department of Justice officials, combing legal sources to see how jurisdiction can be established and tapping networks to connect with Malcolm X’s children for their support in pressing the new leads. The work will also help Sykes continue questioning how the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act is being implemented. It was a huge achievement when he got it passed in 2008. But that’s a moot point if more cases aren’t carefully chosen for attention and then pursued fully. Those who argue it’s best to leave the past dead and buried tend to discount how unsolved murders — or clouded cases such as this — chase the living through the descendants of the murdered, the accused, the never fully exonerated. Rarely are these old civil rights cases as simplistic as people wish to believe. Their nuances often challenge how we’d like to recount history. And sometimes, it seems the truth simply won’t let itself be known until a proper amount of time has passed.

With the recent shocking revelation that one of Malcolm X’s escaped assassins [William Bradley] had appeared in a 2010 campaign commercial for Newark [New Jersey] Mayor Cory Booker, the reappearance of the shadowy "Sixth Man" of the Nation of Islam's Temple No.25 assassination team Linward X Cathcart [aka Abdul Karriem Muhammad], the 2010 parole release of convicted Malcolm X assassin Talmadge Hayer [aka Thomas Hagan], the long-awaited publication of Manning Marable’s biography ‘Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention’ and the accession to power of an African-American president [Barack Obama] - along with his appointment of an African-American Attorney General [Eric Holder] - never has there been a 'galactic alignment' more conducive to the re-examination of the still-unsolved Malcolm X assassination and the bringing to trial of those responsible for this dastardly crime.

The hour has arrived to explore new evidence, cross-examine the surviving participants in the Malcolm X assassination and finally disentangle the Gordian Knot of what has remained one of the world’s most labyrinthine yet emotive of criminal cases.

NEW EVIDENCE

The Black “Zapruder Film”

Television news footage filmed outside the Audubon Ballroom in the immediate aftermath of Malcolm’s assassination has recently revealed an 'apparition' that has gone all but unnoticed for over 40 years. For the first time eyewitnesses have identified the Frankenstein-like lumbering frame of Nation of Islam assassin William Bradley who, in a display of stupefying audacity, is still lingering at the scene of a crime he has just helped to perpetrate and can be seen brazenly attempting to FREE one of his fellow killers [Talmadge Hayer] from the clutches of an angry mob.

The world now has an unprecedented opportunity to interview the recently paroled Hayer and get the convicted killer to confirm whether or not the menacing figure in the black trench coat is, indeed, his shotgun-wielding compatriot William Bradley. Needless to say, such a dramatic identification of Bradley by Hayer himself would help seal the legal fate of the vicious New Jersey reptile who fired the fatal shot that took Malcolm's life.

The "Sixth Man"

One of the more troubling spectacles on that fateful day at the Audubon Ballroom was the sickening behaviour of an individual whom numerous eyewitnesses have identified as Nation of Islam ‘lieutenant’ Linward X Cathcart. Linward X, a member of the Nation of Islam’s paramilitary male detachment known as the 'Fruit of Islam' or FOI [and affiliated with the New Jersey No.25 mosque from which the five known assassins hailed], was reportedly observed grinning and laughing as Malcolm X was being gunned down. And while he has long denied any association with the killers his macabre conduct that blood-spattered afternoon has long fortified suspicions that, far from his having been a mere ‘guest’ at the Audubon Ballroom that day [as he has long maintained], Linward X may very well have been nothing less than the on-scene ‘supervisor' of the No.25 hit squad that slew Malcolm X and whose task it was to both ensure the success of its mission and to provide an after-action report to the NOI's gangster leadership in Chicago.

Furthermore, Linward’s close relationship with Minister Louis X [now Farrakhan] of Boston, who had been assigned to preach at No.25 that very same day [and to whom Linward may have also reported the success of the hit on Malcolm], could for once and for all establish Louis Farrakhan's complicity in one of the greatest crimes of the twentieth century. A photograph of Linward X at the Audubon Ballroom that day has reportedly surfaced in the collection of one of Malcolm’s former associates, Earl Grant.

The ‘Dry Runs’

Thanks to the incredible forensic filmography of New York documentary maker Omar Shabazz ['Inside Job', 'The Laughing Lieutenant', 'Naked Lies'] new evidence has emerged that the NOI hired out or otherwise used the Audubon Ballroom on at least FOUR separate occasions in the weeks leading up to Malcolm's assassination. The first of these occurred on 12 January 1965 when the local NOI Mosque No.7 held what was billed as 'A Night with the FOI'. A few weeks later, on 15 February, the assassins staged a 'dry run' of their 'get your hand out of my pocket' diversion during one of Malcolm's rallies there [the commotion in the audience and Malcolm's appeals for calm can be clearly heard on the audio recording of the event]. The very following day, 16 February, Mosque No.7 held another event titled 'Annual Class Closing' for their female membership corps known as the 'Muslim Girls in Training' or MGT. And on 20 February, the night before the assassination, Malcolm's killers purchased tickets for a dance event at the Audubon in order to 'case' the premises one last time and finalise their plans.

Move like a Butterfly, Sting like an Assassin?

The role of boxing legend Muhammad Ali in the events surrounding Malcolm’s evolving feud with the NOI and ultimate assassination has attracted little attention until recently. Not only was Ali a violent critic of Malcolm's decision to abandon NOI patriarch Elijah Muhammad but Ali had a close personal and professional relationship with at least one of the would-be assassins, Clarence 2X Gill. Gill, who served as one of Ali's own bodyguards and close confidants, was a Fruit of Islam ‘captain’ affiliated with Louis Farrakhan’s Boston Mosque No.11 and in addition to his having once sought to murder Malcolm X with a silenced pistol [an incident to which Malcolm refers in a 1972 Marvin Worth documentary about his life] Gill is believed to have been part of a back-up hit team at the Audubon Ballroom on the 21st of February 1965. Gill was reportedly shot by Malcolm X bodyguard Reuben Francis at the Audubon while fleeing and may have later received treatment for his wounds at Muhammad Ali’s Miami training camp - from Ali’s very own fight doctor. Gill, along with one Alvin X Walcott [the half-brother of Louis Farrakhan], is also suspected of having been a member of the team of NOI arsonists who firebombed Malcolm X’s Queens residence on 14th February 1965.

The nightmarish prospect that so revered a Mandela-esque hero as Muhammad Ali may have harboured a vicious criminal like Gill in the full knowledge of his role in an attempt on Malcolm’s life would be a truly tragic coda to what has been an otherwise illustrious career.

Louis Farrakhan’s 1972 Tirade

A new recording has surfaced of a vitriolic 22 January 1972 speech by Louis Farrakhan in which the future NOI leader celebrates the murder of Malcolm X, praises his killers as 'fearless men' and ridicules what he calls the 'cowardice' of the defenceless men, women and children in the Audubon Ballroom who attempted to flee as the assassins bullets ricocheted around the auditorium. Like Farrakhan’s infamous 1993 ‘Saviours Day’ diatribe in which he all but revelled in the NOI’s role in murdering the 'traitor' Malcolm X, these sermons demonstrate the depth of the homicidal animus that Farrakhan harboured towards Malcolm and strengthen suspicions that Farrakhan’s personal involvement in the assassination runs far deeper than his previously acknowledged culpability for ‘creating the atmosphere’ that led to Malcolm’s killing.

Furthermore, Farrakhan’s very presence at New Jersey's Mosque No.25 on the very same day that Malcolm X was murdered by assassins affiliated to that temple cries out for much closer scrutiny than it has hitherto received in the light of the newly-revealed roles played in the events at the Audubon Ballroom that tragic day by Linward X Cathcart and Clarence 2X Gill – two of Farrakhan’s closest associates.

PROSPECTIVE GRAND JURY WITNESSES

Talmadge Hayer [aka Thomas Hagan]: the recently paroled assassin of Malcolm X who made two sworn affidavits in 1977 and 1978 exonerating Norman 3X Butler and Thomas 15X Johnson [two individuals wrongly convicted for the crime] and instead naming William Bradley, Wilbur McKinley, Leon Davis and Benjamin Thomas as the individuals who carried out the killing with him. Hayer would be in a unique position to identify Bradley in the aforementioned “Zapruder Film”. He would also be in a position to confirm whether Linward X was part of the overall hit team. He may also be able to shed light on the participants in the 14 February 1965 firebombing of Malcolm’s home as well as provide information on the long-held suspicion that persons ostensibly working for Malcolm's Organisation of Afro-American Unity [OAAU] - Robert 35X Smith and James 67X Shabazz in particular - were in fact spying for the NOI.

Norman 3X Butler [aka Muhammad Abdul Aziz]: one of the two individuals wrongly imprisoned for assassinating Malcolm X. Butler would be in a position to confirm the claim that former NOI national secretary John Ali met with him and at least four other FOI members and attempted to form them into a hit team to kill Malcolm X. Another of the attendees at this meeting was Thomas 15X Johnson [aka Khalil Islam] who was also wrongly convicted for the Malcolm X killing. Butler also attended the now infamous FOI 'Wannsee Conference' of 28 June 1964 at which over 700 regional security officials of the organization were issued with an explicit order to kill Malcolm X by the Assistant Supreme Captain [and son of NOI leader Elijah Muhammad], Elijah Muhammad Jr.

"Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention," the new book by Columbia University professor Manning Marable, outlines why the investigation should be reopened. Marable died last week, just before publication. Zaheer Ali, Marable's chief researcher, said, "Professor Marable believed in justice. And his killers were never served justice." On Feb. 21, 1965, Malcolm X was speaking to several hundred people at the Audubon Ballroom in upper Manhattan when three men suddenly stood up in the front rows and opened fire. Talmadge Hayer was caught at the scene and confessed to being one of the gunmen. Twelve years later, he signed affidavits claiming two other men, who both served long sentences, had nothing to do with the shooting. David Garrow, historian and author, said, "As Marable's quite powerful book details, four of the actual assassins never were pursued and at least one of them still lives openly in the metro New York area." The book claims the New York Police Department knew Malcolm X's life was in danger but turned the other way in the face of threats. By almost any standard, the investigation at the Audubon Ballroom was shoddy. Four hours after Malcolm X was shot, the Audubon was reopened for a church dance. The crime scene was cleaned up before a full forensic analysis could be done. "There were still bullet holes in the wall when this dance party was taking place," Ali said. "So these kinds of questions are the kinds of questions this book raises." Police deny a cover-up. But in his last interview, Marable told CBS News he wanted the Justice Department to reopen the case. Now plenty of people wait to see if this last wish will be granted.

An Appeal to the Malcolm X Scholars & Minister Louis Farrakhan

In light of the recent Edgar Ray Killen conviction for the 1964 Chaney/Goodman/Schwerner slayings, the recent exhumation of the body of Emmett Till, the 1994 Byron De La Beckwith conviction for the 1963 Medgar Evers murder, the 1998 charging of Klan imperial wizard Sam Bowers with the 1966 firebomb attack on an NAACP activist and the 2002 conviction of another Klansman, Bobby Frank Cherry, for his role in the 1963 Birmingham church bombing (that killed, among others, a relative of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice) the time has NOW come to re-open the most important of all of the civil rights-era murder cases, namely, that of Malcolm X.

It has been 40 long years since Malcolm X was gunned down, 21 February 1965, at the Audubon Ballroom by five of Elijah Muhammad’s thugs in a savage crime that remains unsolved to this day. Four of his cowardly killers ~ Benjamin Thomas, Leon Davis, Wilbur McKinley and William Bradley ~ have never been held accountable. Together with Talmadge Hayer (the only one of the original five to have served time for the crime) these individuals comprise what I will here refer to as the Newark Five ~ the “special squad” that was established by the Nation of Islam’s (NOI) New Jersey Temple No. 25 to carry out the cold-blooded murder of Malcolm X.

Between December of 1963 and February of 1965 Malcolm X was the object of multiple attempts on his life by the NOI in cities as widely scattered as Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and New York. These attempts were on a national scale and were being centrally co-ordinated from the NOI’s Chicago headquarters. This gives the lie to the notion (punted by Minister Louis Farrakhan during a series of 1990-1993 lectures on the Malcolm X assassination) that the killing was the spontaneous act of New Jersey “zealots” and unconnected to the NOI’s senior leadership.

In the wake of the 15 October ‘Millions More Movement’ it is now more imperative than ever that the single most divisive (and explosive) issue that continues to hover over the Black World be finally put to rest for once and for all: WHO killed Malcolm X and WHY have they never been brought to justice? This is made all the more urgent by the fact that the individual who convened that gathering, Minister Farrakhan, is believed by many to have played some role in the crime.

In spite of my intense and long-standing admiration for Mr. Farrakhan questions concerning his complicity in the assassination of Malcolm X have always bothered me. In particular, I have long been troubled by claims that Farrakhan was part of some “ad hoc committee” assembled to ruin Malcolm X following the latter’s 8 March 1964 break with the NOI. Equally troubling have been suggestions that the February 14, 1965 firebombing of Malcolm’s home (while he, his wife and children lay asleep inside) may have been partly carried out by members of Farrakhan’s Boston No. 11 temple. This raises the truly discomfiting spectre that when Malcolm’s daughter, Attallah Shabazz, met with journalist Mike Wallace and Farrakhan in May of 2000 (for the CBS ‘60 Minutes’ program) to discuss the latter’s complicity in her father’s murder she was unwittingly meeting with a man who may have played some role in an attempt on her own life.

Furthermore, Farrakhan’s presence at No. 25 on the very day that Malcolm was murdered by the Newark Five is something I have long found highly suspicious. His claim that he was merely part of a succession of NOI ministers who were being “rotated” in and out of that temple in order to maintain attendance rates (following the April 1964 relocation of its resident minister, James Shabazz, to New York’s No. 7 to replace Malcolm X) has never been especially convincing. In addition, reports concerning a sickening 1971 utterance by Farrakhan (during a Carbondale, Illinois speech) to the effect that Malcolm X should be “dug up and killed again” for slandering Elijah Muhammad have made it increasingly difficult for me to fully shake the suspicion that Farrakhan was, at a minimum, an unindicted co-conspirator who played a greater role in the crime than he has thus far owned up to.

As a result of all of these questions and concerns, Mr. Farrakhan finds himself in the wholly unique position of being perhaps the only personality in the entire Western world of his level of stature, prominence and (relative) respectability who is yet believed to have been personally complicit in a crime as serious as murder and has nevertheless managed to sustain, and even enhance, his national and international profile. These are concerns that only he can fully, and finally, put to sleep. Not a single call for reparations or an end to police brutality or the freeing of “political prisoners” or whatever other litany of wrongs were wailed from the Washington Mall podium this past October will ever be worth a hearing in the absence of a full and final accounting of, and “atoning” for, whatever role he and the NOI played in the savage and unforgivable murder of Malcolm X.

Malcolm X is infinitely more deserving of the energies of Black America’s (and the world’s) activists and advocates for justice than those expended on Assata Shakur, Mumia Jamal and Geronimo Pratt. Nobody in our history did more to excite us about ourselves and our possibilities than Malcolm X. He impressed us with ourselves. He exhilarated us with ourselves. And he was snatched away from us by the most depraved and demented savages the Black World ever had the misfortune to spawn: the Newark Five, their accomplices and all of those up and down the NOI chain of command through whom the assassination order was transmitted. They must now ALL be held to account.

RECOMMENDED ACTIONS

~ The surviving four of the Newark Five ~ Benjamin Thomas, Leon Davis, Wilbur McKinley and William Bradley [aka Mustafa Shabazz] ~ must be immediately arrested and charged with the assassination of Malcolm X. (There has long been speculation about a sixth individual, a Linward X Cathcart [now known as Abdul Karriem Muhammad] of No. 25, who is believed to have played some sort of “observer” role during the killing. He, too, should be arrested and charged.) These Islamic extremists, responsible for the murder of Malcolm X, are nothing but terrorists and should be treated with the same severity as that reserved for Al Qaeda operatives

~ A sweeping legal action must be initiated against any members of the Elijah Muhammad NOI (EM-NOI), Louis Farrakhan NOI (LF-NOI) and any other Third Party that had any involvement in any attempt on the life of Malcolm X conducted between Dec. 1963 and Feb. 1965

~ A team of attorneys should be immediately engaged and a set of charges ~ including Complicity by Aiding and Abetting as well as Conspiracy to Commit Murder ~ made ready

~ Minister Louis Farrakhan must make himself available, at a time to be mutually agreed upon, to appear before a panel of the most eminent Malcolm X/NOI scholars and legal experts (to include Manning Marable, Michael Eric Dyson, Peter Goldman, Howard Dodson, Clayborne Carson, Michael Friedly, Abdul Alkalimat, Bruce Perry, Herb Boyd, Charles Rangel, Rodnell Collins, Percy Sutton, James H. Cone, Florence Hamlish Levinsohn, Zak Kondo, Louis A. DeCaro, Les Payne, Karl Evanzz, Robert Singh, Mattias Gardell and Eugene Victor Wolfenstein, among others) to be subjected to the most thorough, rigorous and methodical cross-examination about his and the N.O.I.’s role in the assassination of Malcolm X. Farrakhan must also agree to a Polygraph Examination of a number of highly dubious claims he made during his 1990-1993 series of “What Really Happened to Malcolm X?” lectures

~ The US Government (having made available to the public the Nixon, Johnson and Kennedy White House Tapes) must now declassify and release to the world the Muhammad Tapes. These important recordings will enable the world to establish the extent to which the NOI patriarch, Elijah Muhammad, and his immediate associates were personally responsible for the assassination of Malcolm X. This, in the light of FBI electronic intercepts indicating that a number of explicit orders to kill Malcolm were issued by Elijah Muhammad himself

~ A grand jury should be empanelled to look into the Malcolm X assassination and Mr. Farrakhan should offer his (and the NOI’s) full and unrestricted co-operation to said grand jury

~ A voice analysis of FBI wiretap recordings should be conducted on the interminable series of death threats that were made to Malcolm’s home telephone number, OL1-6320, between Dec. 1963 and Feb. 1965 and arrests made of any of the surviving culprits responsible

~ An investigation should also be re-opened into the Feb. 14, 1965 firebombing of his Elmhurst home in light of the grotesque “Jericho” directive issued on June 28, 1964 by Elijah Muhammad, Jr. (to a regional gathering of Fruit of Islam, or F.O.I., “soldiers”) that Malcolm’s home should be destroyed, his tongue severed by his attackers, placed in an envelope and delivered to Elijah Muhammad

~ All FBI wiretaps of (among others) Chicago No. 2, New York No. 7, Boston No. 11, Philadelphia No. 12, Newark No. 25 (together with its Jersey City, Patterson and Plainfield satellites) and Los Angeles No. 27 telephone conversations, along with clandestine recordings of speeches (covering, at least, the period 1962-1966), should be declassified and released to investigators as these “temples” were notorious for their depraved and murderous attitudes towards Malcolm X

~ A South Africa-style Truth & Reconciliation Commission ~ The Malcolm X Assassination & Atonement Commission ~ should be established to enable all of those who were in any way involved in the Malcolm X murder (both within and outside of the NOI) to come forth, confess their crimes and be reconciled with those whom they wronged

~ The NOI must accept full responsibility for the fact that two innocent men ~ Norman 3X Butler and Thomas 15X Johnson ~ were wrongly imprisoned for the murder of Malcolm X when the NOI could easily have spared them that fate by surrendering those whom they knew to be guilty

For over 40 long years the surviving members of the Newark Five and their associates have thumbed their noses at the memory of the man they slew while the world stood idly by and did nothing. Those days are over. Malcolm X ~ and the degree to which we work to bring his killers to justice ~ will be the final measure of our worth as a people. As the ‘Millions More Movement’ proceeds apace one thing becomes crystal clear: If we can’t find it within ourselves to do justice by Malcolm X, of all people, we ~ as a people ~ aren’t worth doing justice by.

It’s that simple.
